Finish Grading
Finish grading generally refers to the surface finish of your yard. When a new home is built, rough grading is done to establish the overall contour of the ground, and to back-fill areas that were previously excavated. Rough grading, by virtue of the name, is rough, leaving sticks, rocks, and large chunks of dirt at the surface.
Finish grading is the process by which the surface of the ground is smoothed out, tilled and prepared for seed. The area between the sidewalk and the house is filled in. Any voids remaining from the rough grade are filled, such as along the driveway and foundation. The slope is checked around the perimeter of the house to make sure water will flow away from the foundation. Swales may be created as needed. The yard gets a shallow tilling and raking. In the process, larger sticks and rocks are removed, and the yard is left smooth and prepared for seed. Grass seed is typically spread at this time.
Resloping or Regrading
There are a variety of reasons for regrading or resloping your yard. Some common ones include improving drainage and water mitigation, and repairing a yard after a pool is installed, or after another construction project is done.
